Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology
(In-class and Online) 60 hours
This course permits the student to acquire a basic medical terminology vocabulary related to body systems necessary to communicate information effectively and comfortably in a medical office or hospital environment. You will learn and practice the principles of how medical words are formed, including the basic rules of building medical words, identifying suffixes, prefixes, and combining forms related to the structures and functions of the associated systems of the body. This is an intensive course, requiring approximately 8 hours of homework per week. Statement of Course Completion awarded on successful completion. Text required.
This course is part of the Introductory Medical Office Assistant Training program and a prerequisite for the Medical Transcription and Hospital Unit Coordinator programs. It can also be used to meet the Medical Terminology course prerequisite requirement for the Sterile Supply Technician program. Successful students will be prepared to write the VIHA (Vancouver Island Health Authority) Medical Terminology exam.

*If you are taking the online course, make sure you pick up the online course edition that includes the access code, or you will not have access to the online classroom. It is a good idea to take along a printout of this screen including the ISBN # listed above when picking up your course textbook. Many textbooks look alike, but it is important to get the textbook with the correct ISBN # for the course that you are registered in.
Also Required (for both in-class and online): a recent medical dictionary (3 years old or less) such as "Tabers Medical Dictionary 'Plain'" or "Stedman's Medical Dictionary". Note that Tabers Medical Dictionary is available online - current annual subscription fee is just $34.95 USD. Stedman's Medical Dictionary is also available online - current one-time cost is $50.95 USD.
